It comes into my mind that as French Fries and Vodka are both derived from potatoes, so too our literary devil and our theological devil spring from the same source, the Devil. One concept is a distillation from scripture while the other is the chopped up and mass produced remnants of varied traditions. I do not bemoan the fact, as some Christians are of a want to, that the Romantics made the Devil sexy, for there is a truth even in that depiction; the devil is a tempter, just as all sin is tempting, though I stand against the Romantics as they made him a hero to emulate.
These thoughts came over me while enjoying Panic! At the Disco. My introduction was Emperor’s New Clothes, and one of my favorites may be the preceding, This is Gospel. Both, I don’t think this can be denied, use strong Christian images in their official music videos, and together, I think they present an intriguing challenge to Christianity.
