Prayers before Dawn

Now slink, now crawl, you mighty shadow.
Dawn is breaking on the hill.
What terrors waxed, what minds you've shattered—
Healing light undoes your ill.
Eternal rest for sundry souls—
your victims shall know sleep
while you yourself shall lie on coals
and there forever weep.
Grant mercy unto us, O Lord,
who fumbling in the dark
have hope only to be restored
if You our prayers hark.
