Flight

Then, weary, when not another step could I force my sad corpse, I stayed, fallen lengthwise in collapse upon a bed of rain soaked moss and nettles, but before my eyes drew themselves closed in sleep, her awful siren chords wafted through the twilight. I had begun to see again, my hands, pale and scarred, were stretched before me like bleached bones. Moaning, I tried to move, but no further twitch could I awaken even in my fingers.

“You made it so far,” she cooed. “But I’m so hungry, and you so tired. Shall our final meal be a picnic?”
