Finally

The ancient markers stirred. The floor shifted underneath my feet as the massive gears which had lain dormant all my life and my father’s and his father’s suddenly gave a violent lurch of freedom.

Finally, the rosy West grew dark. Night had ceased. Dark Nix had conquered. I craned my head up one last time and saw, in the pale, darkening horizon, what my broken heart had refused to let me hope for:

Slowly, one by one, the sky filled up with stars.

I stared, gawking, as death stole over me. The vision grew dark as my eyes were shrouded in sleep—sleep and dreams…
