The Castle in the Woods

Silence settled over us as her words and their unspoken meaning rattled in my mind.

“I can do it,” I said, “but it will hurt.”

“How much?” she asked, her voice like a child’s.

I gazed at my arm.

“That’s something I can’t—there’s no pain quite like it.” Undoing my collar, I said, “Go ahead.”

Before I blinked, she was at my throat, my lifeblood flowing into her. I clutched her head, making sure she couldn’t pull away, and began to heal.

Her body jerked, and a muffled scream escaped her mouth, as a fire burned in us both.
