Another Fall

A drink will strengthen
a draft will kill
a sip may lengthen
but will never fill.

I sought you by the riverside
along the sinking bank.
I thought, perhaps, in the sunrise…
a luminous current I drank.
One soul falls as you ascend
I fell into that gleaming bend
found darkness & not Light a friend.

Sweet river rushing cooly over me
Slow & sure, you drag me down into the sea.

No rest in riverbed
Nor solace this night,
I feel my soul—cold as the dead—
prepare again to fight.
