The Shape of the Other

“Don’t you understand? They. Made. Us. Of course you find them beautiful and alluring. They made you to love them, but we’re cattle.”

“What did they live on before they made us?” I wondered. My friend offered no answer, and so I went on, “I mean, the lion doesn’t make the lamb, sheep do. The individual predator preys upon his, well, prey, but in the aggregate, the relation of the populations of predators and prey—they’re symbiotic. Did they make us, or did we make them too?”

My companion remained silent.

“Sorry,” I said. “It was just a passing thought.”
