The Bitter Heartbeat

BY DR. AGONSON

There’s glass between us two you cannot see,
encasement formed of freezing icicles.
We touch, but nothing ever touches me.
Know, unremittingly the world cycles,
yet I divorced, solely in winter live.
My heart of bitterness is solid cold,
it cannot beat, would die if ‘twere to give.
Please leave, escape before you grow too old,
and learn wisdom too late. I warn you now,
you can find joy if from me you retire,
but by my side I never will allow
the hope of rest or peace ‘til you expire.
I dreamed I was a man who loved, but wake
to warn: it’s best this dream you would forsake.
