Justice & Mercy: Appeal to Heaven

Beside him, her angel touched his arm, and he knew a peace that he, the person he had made himself, the character he’d created and lost himself to, had never known. Yet it was familiar, something known before history, before the darkness had consumed him, before that bloody night when he too was a child alone and afraid and crying to God as his world fell apart. For a moment he thought he saw her, that child he’d saved, her little hand on his elbow. With shame and tears, he cast the gun aside.

“God!” he gasped into the darkness.
