A Friend

Well, a good friend of mine has left the ranks of bachelorhood and joined the enemy. But, as far as enemies go, I guess she’s okay. Joking aside, I was honored to be counted among the groomsmen. This was the most informal wedding I’ve ever attended; there was a real sense of levity, and laughter pervaded all. Thinking on how long I’ve known the groom, and realizing it’s been almost half of my life, it seems appropriate, at this juncture, that I should share this tale.

There was a time in my life where I prayed, near daily, for a solid Christian friend. There were plenty of people I associated with who would have called themselves Christians, but none of them had that light in them. Concerned more for the things of this world than of God’s, I have not been surprised to see many of them deny the faith.

But one day I met this quiet kid who’d hardly say a word to me. As time wore on though, he warmed up to my exuberant personality. It might have taken a few years, but we eventually got to the point of having full conversations. Soon after, I learned how passionate he was for Christ, even to the point where one day he confronted me, making sure I knew Jesus was my savior.

My prayers for a friend who knew Jesus have been answered with a few close friendships, but he was the first one God sent me. I’m humbled to partake of life with this honest man, and look forward to seeing him and his bride walking with Christ as their light.

May you two have a long and happy life together.

I think we sung this at the wedding today,
