What dreams the king up on his throne?
What weight now bows his head?
Some oracle furrows his brow?
Some news of what’s to come?
Have curriers brought message ill?
Have bad reports been heard?
What causes this, a man so great,
so lowly to appear?

Concerns of state little matter,
concerns he thinks not of,
when his child, his daughter, sleeps,
when she will wake no more.
His kingdom’s worth? His head is bare!
his diadem despised .
