Not Gods

BY DR. AGONSON

Once we dreamed of happiness
but here we know no sleep;
we’d fight for better days than these,
but the lies no longer keep.

We are not gods;
hunger and thirst
for vices we embraced
now wear the crowns
our hubris stole…
our human souls replaced.

We tried to rise above God’s throne
but hide away in caves;
the light’s too strong now it has grown—
we dare not leave our graves.
