Bravery

BY DR. AGONSON

The clanging swords of countless hosts
resound within my ears.
Their bloody war brought on by boasts
will bring such bitter tears.

They drench the earth in crimson rain,
and stir it underfoot.
To God I ask, “What will remain
when all’s burnt up in soot?”

And yet the battle must be fought,
—or else it must be lost—
for in all times freedom is bought,
and men must pay the cost.

Thus endings bring about the new,
and though there’s death, hope is in view.
