Best to Pretend

Have you been dreaming? So softly, dreams come, visions broken in waking, shattered by a startling light. What violence the truth can bring. Best to close your eyes; keep them shut tight. Pretend to still dream, even if you know—yes, it’s best to pretend.

If you are very still, you might fall asleep again anyway, and this terrible dawn will melt away. You can sleep forever, and the light won’t bother you in the grave.

Do you hear the sound of my spade? Forgive me. When the earth grows thick enough over you, you will not hear a thing.
