Just Evil

Staring into his face, I ask, “Where did I go wrong?” He pulls at the chains binding him, growling and frothing. Then, as I stare into his eyes, I finally see it: “You’re just evil? Is that it? Was I wrong this whole time? Those toothless hicks have finally shown me up? Saul took one look at you and said, ‘Evil.’ I didn’t believe in evil. How could I? But what other word is there for you? When words helped you, you used them, but now that you got what you wanted—that your masters got what they wanted—you’ve just reverted back into a pure monster.” I gaze down at my hands. “How many people have died because I just couldn’t accept what any child could tell me. You sang your song well, and now that you’ve served your purpose, you’re just a living decay, a frothing demon. Wasn’t there anything you said that was true?”
