Softly, Now

Softly, now; he’ll hear a whisper or a sigh. Make your step as light as air; your breath as slow as time. Even a heartbeat, it’s been said, can betray you to his ears.

Then sound the brass. Bang the drums; cover my flight in song. Let arias arise tonight; cicadas wake and shout! Why let him rest in quiet readiness? The silent night’s his strength. Ring the bells, sound the alarms; a dinful ruckus make.

We'll drive him mad, then; it's been done,
but he'll be there at dawn.
You must be ready then to run
forever after, John.
