Maybe we’re trapped in the stories we’re telling. I can’t tell it any way I want. I can’t write it in a way that makes vampires good—they stop being vampires—but maybe, if I remember correctly, the Orthodox church won’t burn suspected vampires, for that would damn the vampire’s soul: they held out hope that even the monster could be redeemed.
Well, I can pity a vampire even if he has no pity left for all the tears he’s shed. How will it end? A fire is coming; the drapes will be pulled back, by his hand or another.
