From the Archive: Some Feedback

I’m feeling sick. Very tired. See you tomorrow.

So, I’m fairly excited. My maternal uncle has read my book. (He loves horror movies and is the first person besides me to have read it through.) He liked it, but he had one criticism: “You don’t dumb it down,” he said. Now, this was said in reference to the fact that my story is filled with allusions, and about ninety percent of those allusions are biblical. My uncle warns me that your average Joe Horror has no biblical literacy.

So, should I dumb it down? Should I write an appendix or some sort of key? Yes, when I title a chapter, “Is That You, O Troubler of Israel?” I think I’m being very clever, but perhaps I am only troubling my reader, and when a group of three minor characters are named Peter, James, and John, perhaps I am being too clever.

Who is to say? Afterall, what is truth?

* Do you like to make allusions in your writing?

* How would you balance out this issue?

* Am I shooting myself in the foot?
