My mom is a font of wisdom, often finding the perfect turn of phrase as if by accident. If she produced only one or two of these proverbs, I might believe they were only a coincidence, but it is her general habit to proffer these “accidental” insights on a weekly basis. My Dad, trying to hold back his delighted laughter, shared with me one of my mother’s new proverbs: “Why are they all laughing when Biden speaks? Don’t they know he’s a big, fat joke?” This new koan may well lead the contemplative into enlightenment, though my mother denies she meant anything by it at all, refusing to add further comment to help elucidate this enigma to us men.
One might object that a joke is something to laugh at, but, as one might object to the objection, a joke isn’t quite so funny when it’s not a joke.
