Stars in the Darkness

And in the deadly night, I paused, a moment's sigh,

and gazed above my head into the starry sky.
A glimpse was all I caught before the time was done,
before the monster's shriek did set me to a run.
And when I think upon that cruel and fearful flight,
anon, my thoughts do drift to heaven's gentle light
which comfort slew despair, renewed my weary soul—
the darkness I could bear; with stars the night is full.
