Panther’s Approval

The silent footsteps of the cat’s soft tread seemed to freeze his heart as it slowly crept toward him. The amber eyes, staring at him from the shadowy form, shone like blazing stars fallen from heaven. They burned with a horrible intensity, and Victor froze solid as Panther crept out from behind the sofa and began a sort of weaving salutation between his legs.

“It’s growling,” he gasped, not daring to look down at his feet.

“Oh, ee’s just ‘ungry,” assured Lucy.

Victor felt a cold sweat dripping down his temple as he wondered what sort of fare this cat had in mind. Panther continued purring for Lucy’s guest. He didn’t know why, but he took an instant liking to the stranger. He was still and quiet; Panther approved.
