Thanksgiving 2023

Happy Thanksgiving.

I hope you all have a lovely holiday. It is somewhat traditional to choose some particular thing to be thankful for, and there are many blessings in my life which would warrant some mention. I have a fairly stable job at present which is the beginning of a career. I have family, friends, tea. Life is good, and it is, in some sense, life that I want to make specific mention of. I grapple, from time to time, with depression, and it has, before now, turned to oppressive thoughts of suicide. I pray that God will continue to give me grace to overcome these struggles. One very practicable habit against this malady is the cultivation of thankfulness, even in the face of a witless, hypercritical mood I sometimes fall into where all of beauty and goodness seem to drain from the world like all the color has been sucked out of it leaving only an ugly, gray ash. I choose, even in the midst of this struggle, to be thankful, even when it seems to be mere playacting.

So, I am thankful for life, for my life, for this one little moment of time I have to see and hear and touch and taste, and even to smell. It’s not always a pleasant smell, it’s not always a good world, but it is, and there is, I think, something to that.
