Layover

As I walked over the black pavement, I felt the heat double. The sun above, cooking me and the road, the road below, hot as a frying pan, and I trapped between. I felt the sweat dripping off my nose as I made it across; felt my clothes sticking to me. I pushed open the diner’s door and blest the blast of cold air which struck my face. As the door swung shut behind me, I locked eyes with the waitress behind the counter. I tried to talk, but I hadn’t said a word for…I didn’t know how long.

“Wa—”
