The soft night crept over the valley; the strange calls of the nightbirds and the lustful yowls of cats broke the twilit silence as darkness conquered all. I awoke from my strange dreams and wondered what hour I had found and whether there were stars to yet be seen. But no, heaven was veiled in somber clouds that gave no light. I closed my eyes and searched for sleep as the noises of the valley found their way into my wakeful ears.
Strange dreams return mixing with what I hear,
a wailing in the night and howls of weird delight…
A stranger ever stands within the mirror.
And though I dream, I dread the morning’s weariness. I sleep but cannot sleep. I lie to tell the truth, am driven mad for being sane. I close my eyes but cannot stop my ears.
