I’m not sure how to commemorate the end of this year. Admittedly, there has always been an arbitrariness to New Year’s Eve that has bothered me. Why end the year in January? Why begin it in December? Or is it the other way round?
But there really ought to be an end and a beginning. It’s good to say “This is an end and this a beginning” even if there doesn’t seem to be much difference between December 31st and January 1st. It’s good to set goals; even if you fail, you may be all the better for trying.
