America?

I heard myself thinking to myself, “Maybe you’re right, but I have no faith in America.” Some of you may roll your eyes at this. What is more out of fashion than patriotism? Especially for someone of my age and schooling, I have been an anachronism, a final holdout, the last lover of a bygone empire.

To me, the word America has always meant George Washington and the Revolution, being a citizen and not a subject, being able to speak freely, go freely, associate freely, but George Washington is dead, we are all subjected to the whims of unelected powers, and the freedoms I thought defined us were given up without a fight.

And when I hear of wars and rumors of wars, I find myself hoping someone would drop a few well-placed bombs and vaporize this cancerous growth we call a government, but it’s not something that can be solved with bombs, is it? There isn’t a place or a person that can be destroyed and by that destruction set America free. There isn’t an America to be set free anymore, is there?
