There was a slight hum and then nothing. The light of the sky dimmed, and I gazed up into the great silence of space held there in the ancient portal. The steel cuffs around my wrists felt cold. I wondered if any of these stars, these strange stars, had names. The officers to either side of me shuffled me along, marching me up to the grand council’s representative, a white bearded fool gazing at me from under his blanched and bushy eyebrows. He looked half asleep.
“Top of the morning to you,” I smiled, trying to manage a wave through my restraints.
He grunted and nodded, and the two bullies led me along to my doom.
The surface of the portal glistened like a bubble. Beyond, there was nothing but the vast emptiness of space.
“You can’t kill me, you know?” I said. The guards remained silent, as silent as space. “I’ll drift for eternity, but eventually, I’ll drift back here.”
I felt a shove at my back, and I went head first into the darkness. For a moment, the light of my home shone upon me from the portal, but as I spun helplessly into the darkness, the ancient gate closed.
