Holiday Blues

The world was beautiful after the rain, but though the afternoon sun shone brightly, there was a taste of winter in the air. I wonder if the dead could feel it too. Some of them were very sophisticated at times, lucid. There was a hint of humanity left in them, in some more than others. I even saw one motion to another once. Shot them both in the head; brains everywhere.

This one had walked into a bear trap during the storm. I stepped out into the yard, a club in hand. My eyes scanned all around me. It would be just like them to let me go up and kill this one only for five more to suddenly spring upon me. But, I didn’t see any, so I made my way up to him.

“Looks like an early winter,” I said. He grunted. “Spending the holidays with family?” I asked. A moan. “Me, I’ll be spending Christmas alone this year.”

I tried to knock his head off with one blow, but his neck was too sturdy. The club buried itself in his head. He collapsed. I reset the bear trap and dragged the corpse away.
