Drabble Series: The Exhumation

“You don’t want to understand it,” said Dr. Val, twirling his mustache. “But you know. If you will, you’ll remember. What was it he always said to you? What did he tease you with as children?”

“That he’d come back.”

“Yes,” said Dr. Val. “He said he’d come back, and now his body’s disappeared. What did he say?”

“That he’d come back. That he’d get me.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know why. To be cruel, to scare me.”

“Think,” he said. “Why has he come back? Why did you open up the coffin?”

“Father died, and it’s my estate now.”

“Exactly.”
