Drabble: Cold, Ancient, Dead

Cold, ancient, dead. The planet lay below, a lifeless sphere. Crumbling ruins stood like mountains in the vast, frozen deserts; falling cities, like thick forests, held their echoed secrets within. A great civilization, I was told, highly advanced. Some art remained of the living things which once inhabited that alien world, but they wouldn’t be published. That’s why I came; why I’m leaving. I came because I wanted to know the secret, see what my colleges wouldn’t tell me. I’ve seen. I know what they were, this long dead race. I know it now, and I pray I will forget.
