“Who are we?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, like, we’re the ominous voices that say things at the beginnings of books and movies and stuff, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I mean, who exactly are we? We mumble out these prophecies or omens or whatnot to set the tone, or whatever, but do we have names? Are we characters in the story or just disembodied voices? When the narrative starts, where do we go? What’s our motivation for telling the audience this stuff? Matter of fact, who is the audience?”
“At this point, my guess would be a rapidly shrinking number.”
