We wonder when the time will end,
when all the stars their light will spend,
when days and nights have no divide,
when moon departs and there’s no tide;
We wonder when these things shall be,
when land sinks deep under the sea,
when heaven falls onto the earth
when chaos squeals in bitter mirth.
I’ve known that knowing can’t be had,
I’ve known it since I was a lad,
I’ve known this riddle’s far from me,
I’ve known limits to what I see.
The end must come to all that’s known,
and in the end we’re all alone.
So creeping death steals all men’s breath.
The end must come, but this is known:
Within that darkness something shone.
I saw in death a brilliant light,
I saw through darkness what was right,
I saw the judgment seat of old,
I saw the truth of what we’re told.
We think of all that lies before,
of all the blessings you outpour,
of all the wonders you have made,
of all the lights and sheltering shade;
We think on all your hands have done,
on all the kindness of your Son,
on all the scars and scourges borne,
on all the veils forever torn.
