I Am Not a Rationalist

I am not a rationalist, and what I mean is that I do not believe there are answers to everything. I think, at bottom, at the deepest level of reality, there is simply . . . simplicity. There is, to put it in the Christian way, the declaration, “I am,” which ends all questions.

But, I do not think I need yet consider religious declarations or scriptural interpretations. Reason itself can be turned against the rationalist position. It is the first lessons of philosophy to know your own ignorance, and the foundation of all reason is, always, irrational.

I love reason, philosophy, and religion, and so I am not a rationalist.
