A high school teacher of mine passed away recently. He was a founding member of the school, he wasn’t that old, and it seems so unreal to think he’s dead. I took him for a class on photography. He first introduced me to Plan 9 from Outer Space.
I remember a piece of wisdom he gave the class once:
One day, he told us, you’re going to take the girl you love out to an expensive restaurant. However, a hot blonde in a red dress is going to walk by your table. If you look at her, your date is going to go very badly.
He told this to us by way of a warning, challenging us to train our minds and eyes so that we would be prepared for the future. (Mostly, he told us this story when he wanted us to put our phones away and pay attention to him.)
He was well loved and will be remembered. He was compassionate and funny, he knew his students, and I can’t think that the school will be the same without him. I don’t know what happened to it, but I once took a very funny picture of him, quite by accident, doing the Sasquatch walk.
