The sea is cold; the sun is hot. Men’s lives are short compared to these eternal things, but one life, though brief, or one man, though so much smaller than these great truths, is beautiful and precious. Though common, it is not worth less than the sun or the sea. I will celebrate the life of one man, saved from the sea, saved from the sun, and think him blessed, for that hand he did not know he later asked for. Sometimes happiness lies on the other side of pain, and such happiness is often greater than happiness of ease.
