It came into my mind today that the big, approaching political question of Joe vs Don has symbolic undertones. It is not merely a question of who should hold the office, but the character of the office. Trump, for all his many faults, cannot be imagined the dog of another. Surely, his biggest failures stem from his aggressive willfulness, his I-know-what-I’m-about attitude. He is not a puppet. Joe barely exists as a person. In contrast to Trump’s brazen self-assuredness, Biden appears not to be a self at all.
The question therefore arises in my mind as to whether the office of the presidency is a real thing or a lie, whether it is to be manned by the one elected or if said official merely acts as a rubber stamp for a party, an ideology, an unseen and unconscious milieu.
Let us be what we seem to be.
