My first attempts at summarizing the book of Ephesians:
In Ephesians, Paul is strengthening week hearts. He admonishes them, proclaiming that not only have they a place in the kingdom of God, but that that place was always, from the beginning of time, a part of God’s plan: They are not less for their part. He strengthens their hearts with the knowledge of God’s eternal love for them. There seems to be a connection then, between this strengthening and Paul’s consideration of hierarchical relationships: Husbands, fathers, and masters are paired with wives, children, and slaves. Like the gifts in the Church, given by Christ in his ascent, we, coming from God, are all before God. The epistle does not clearly define the situation Paul was speaking to, but it seems the Ephesians needed a reminder to take heart in the knowledge of God’s love, to abstain from the sins of the world, but primarily, Paul is telling them to exist in unity as Christ’s body, sharing the truth of the Gospel, a revealing light, with the world.
Main Idea: We are all united in Christ by love for the working of God’s glory.
