A general rule of thumb is to keep one’s peace about what one does not know. So, I don’t write much about politics because I don’t bother to really know what I am talking about. In the same way, though I write about Christianity and atheism, I shy away from writing about other worldviews for the simple fact that I do not know them well.
With that in mind, I was enthralled by an episode of The Rubin Report centering on religious talk by an atheist, a Jew, and a Jungian. I don’t really want to criticize these views, nor imagine myself to be on the same intellectual level of the three, Dave Rubin, Ben Shapiro, or Jordan Peterson. But on one thing I would like to comment: how Christianity is different.
And to be honest, I think Shapiro even mentioned the difference, Jesus. Now, he said this in a way other than I would, with the implication that Jesus really makes no difference. The question was how Christianity differed from Judaism, specifically as regards values, and as regards values, I cannot imagine much of a difference. Christ came to fulfill the law.
Yet, I would attempt to articulate how Jesus makes a difference to those values both sides hold: Jesus is alive. The values, the ideals of the Judeo-Christian worldview, are the same, but their nature is not, at least as far as I know. The general conception of an ideal is impersonal, is cold, hard truth. Jesus is the truth, He is the ultimate value, but not cold, not a distant idea. He is visceral, alive.
