“I will cover up my eyes, and pray it goes away.”
There is always some better to strive for, and the devil will take you there at the cost of your soul. So is it a deal? Halloween has been on my mind of late, and the question arises, what is Halloween all about? Some voices shout that this is an evil holiday, and some respond by leaning into that characterization, embracing the darker elements merely for the darkness.
In contrast to these two extremes, I’d present Halloween as a time to look, to open our eyes and see that there is darkness, there is evil. Yes, this slips easily into tacky macabre, tasteless titillation, but if a culture refuses to see its own shadow, to look at and know its darker side, then it will be that our internal evil finds disguising itself all the easier.
And when Satan comes, offering you a deal, how will you recognize him outside of these darker moments where we choose to uncover our eyes? Halloween, then, is not a time to celebrate darkness, but acknowledge it.
Happy Trick o’ Treating.
