Halloween Declaration: Here Comes October

October’s around the corner, and already the spirit of Halloween is infesting the environment. Here and there the cardboard cut outs of tombstones decorate the yards along this and that street, the local stores are devoting aisles to their sugary wares, and here and there that quintessential shiver greets me like an old friend.

All well and good, but my problem is that I have no great ideas for this coming festival. Last year I compiled a Halloween playlist—still keeping my ear open for any additions I may find—but this year I have no grand scheme. How should I celebrate the upcoming holiday when it seems that half of my blog is already devoted to tales of vampires and zombies, werewolves and, well a lot of werewolves?

Perhaps it’s time I consider actually finishing a story, one which gave me the first hints that I could tell tales that would engage an audience. You see, dear reader, many Halloweens ago, I first started writing a short story I would eventually title Funeral Party. It’s still not finished.

In the interest of giving myself a goal, a way to say I have failed or succeeded, let me try to place the deadline upon myself. I intend to finish this story before All Hallows’ Eve, and if I think it any good, I’ll share it with you.
